Do you often feel peckish? With a craving for a sweet treat, some crunch or a savoury snack to overcome those midday slumps? Well, you’re not alone because snacking is a universal habit. But when it comes to snacking, the choices you make can result in a world of differences. Snacking is definitely a consumption of extra calories, but what should we consume to make those calories count instead of causing weight gain and other health issues?
Believe it or not, snacking has its benefits, let’s take a look!
Firstly, being too hungry before your next meal can lead to overeating! Hence this is when snacking comes in handy to prevent overeating for the next meal. If you avoid snacks, we may tend to wait for the next meal and start eating more than usual which is bad. Hence, don’t hesitate to grab a small healthy snack when you’re feeling peckish in between meals.
Secondly, snacking (healthily) may provide additional nutrients to meet your daily nutritional needs. But that is only if you eat nutrient-dense foods like fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products (yoghurt) or even nuts and seeds. Note that snacks consumed should be around 100 calories only as we do not want snacks to double our calories consumption.
Lastly, snacking actually increases our concentration as there is enough energy in the body to focus and retain any information instead of getting distracted by the hangry growling of our stomach :’)
Some snacks we recommend are vegetables, low-calories energy bars or even popcorn!
Popcorn? Yes, popcorn. It is actually one of the healthy snacks as it is whole grain and filled with fiber. Of course we’re not talking about the kind of popcorns sold in cinemas as those are high in salt or sugar that can have up to 1000 calories! Fresh air-popped popcorns are the best as we have control over the seasonings. Unfortunately, we don’t always have time to prepare fresh pop corn, luckily we have a solution — Serious Popcorn.
